Imo state administrations and their achievements
Commander Godwin Ndubuisi kanu’s administration (feb. 3, 1976 – Aug. 9, 1977)
Commander Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu (later Rear Admiral Rtd) was the first military administrator of Imo State. He was born on November 3, 1943 at Enugu, Enugu State. He hails from Ovim in Isuikwuato in Abia State. He was the command operations officer, Western Naval Command before his appiotment as the military governor of Imo State by Federal Military Government (Murtala Mohammed/General Obasanjo Regime). He moved from Enugu to Owerri on 14th March 1976. At the time of his appointment the new state was besieged with unfathomable socio-political and economic development problems.
Achievements of the Administration.
The landmarks in the administration of commander Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu include:
1.       Launched the Local Government Reforms and created 21 Local Government Areas in Imo State.
2.       Drew up a mater plan for Owerri comprising two twin cities namely: old and new Owerri.
3.       Launched the Universal Primary Education (UPE).
4.       Built the Orlu Road and Okigwe Road secretariats.
5.       Built 400 units of the 1,000 projected Housing units at Aladinma which were allocated to public servants and people in the private sector.
6.       Built the Ariaria Relief Market to ameliorate the sufferings of the victims of Ekeoha Market fire disaster in Aba.
7.       Built Imo Broadcasting Service (IBC) Which went on air on December 25, 1976.
8.       Construction of Owerri, Aba and Umuahia Urban roads started in full swing.
9.       Initiated the policy to provide a general hospital for every Local Government and awarded contracts for the construction of five General Hospitals at Ohafia, Isuikwuato, Etiti, Ohaji and Orlu.
1.     Expansion of urban water schemes and construction of rural water schemes were undertaken.
1.     Contracts for the electrification of 125 communities were awarded.
1.     The Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) was established.
1.     Government motivated communities to establish 540 self help projects. 103 of such projects were completed.
1.     Contract award to ENCO (Nig) Ltd. For the establishment of Clay Product Ltd. Ezinachi.
1.     FUSSI (Fund for Small Scale Industries) was established.
1.    12 new Secondary Schools were opened.
1.     Introduction of Neighborhood schools. By this exercise communities were encouraged to build post primary schools.
1.     Operation Feed the Nation (OFN) was launched in 1976.
1.     Built Local Government Secretariat in 21 Local Government Areas and nine districts.
