A bill to abolish the osu caste system which is one of the most discriminatory traditions in Ibo land (Law Cap. 1, ERN 26) of 1960, “Osu” system law and other matters connected hereto, has passed its second at the Imo state house of Assembly plenary session held on May10, 2018.
The chief sponsor of the Bill, Hon. Nkenna John Nzeruo, representing Oru East state constituency in the Imo house of assembly and co-sponsors, ugonna Ozurigbo, Ikechukwu Amuka, Kennedy Ibe, Lugard Osuji, Uche Agabige, Donatus Onuigwe, Ifeany Nnataraonye, Ngozi Obiefula and Uju Onwudiwe stated that the stigmatization and ill treatment being mated on the Osu people is nothing to write home about. The also maintained that their conditions are  unbearable and not worthy of practice in Igbo land, hence the need for the abolition of the said system.

The hon speaker of the Imo state House of Assmebly Rt. Hon Acho Ihim finally committed to the committee on Judiciary, who are mandated to report back to the house on Thursday, 17 2018.

Meanwhile, it would be recalled that before now some religious institutions have been hammering on the Osu caste system , saying that it is barbaric and not worthy to be practiced among Christians.
